Sometimes, it takes a dear friend visiting for a few days to bring one to some serious humility.
Case in point:
Me.
Our dear friend Jeffrey came to visit, and spent the holidays with us. I prepped our house and got the guest room all ready for him. Washed the sheets. Washed towels. And of course, I cleaned the house. But one room was left neglected and left me stuttering when Jeffrey walked into it.
The room that I’m speaking of is the pantry, and I let this room get so out-of-hand, that a tornado would have probably tidied it up.
And I had a thousand excuses as to why there was such chaos in the pantry. The holidays. Extra baking. Extra cooking. Needed space in the kitchen. The list is endless. And I was so embarrassed when Jeffrey walked in, that I couldn’t even look at him. Not even a quick glance.
And as I’m writing this post, I’m still shaking my head that I let such a small room get so out-of-hand.
But I want to back up for a minute though. When we bought this house, our pantry looked like this:
Debby Downer.
Dark. Closed off. Not a cook’s pantry.
Those doors and the dark wood had to go. The white needed to come in with full force, and those cabinet doors had to go bye-bye.
And that’s what happened – for the most part.
I’d like to say that for most of the time, our pantry stays pretty neat and tidy. This is true. But during the holidays or during certain grocery store super sales, chaos ensures. And that’s when I turn into an Army General and get that pantry back into order.
And then all is right in the world. My psyche is calm. The pantry is tidy. And a happy Mommy is a happy family.
