Here in the Northeast, we need to wait until the days of May to plant our garden. With warm days, and freezing nights, we have to closely watch the weather, and guard our infant plants that have grown from our sown seeds.
Placing the trays on the front porch during the days, and bringing them in at nightfall, the trays full of hopeful fruit bearing plants consumed our windows for weeks. And with my focused eye on the weather, I was cleared to keep with my Mother’s Day tradition, head outdoors, and plant my garden.
With this Mother’s Day gift of a garden buggy that I had wished for, for years, I filled it with my trays and away I went. I raked and weeded, and prepped my garden for the season.
Happy as a clam, I placed each plant in their designated spot. I filled the garden buggy with gourmet dirt, and tilled the nutrients into each garden bed.
One by one, I dug a hole, and placed each plant in its new home. Giving my garden gloves the toss, the dirt on my hands felt like harmony, and the curious chirping of birds sounded like a symphony. I was in my element. I spread a delivery of mulch around each bed to give the paths a freshness.
My time in the garden came with great appreciation of my Mother’s Day tradition. I was visited only twice – once by my own sweet Mama, and another by my Little Miss, who brought me her version of a homemade PB&J. Dare I say, it was heavenly.
With huge satisfaction and complete optimism, I stepped back and gave a small salute to my garden, along with a pep talk to bring us a bountiful harvest.
So, if you haven’t done so as of yet, it’s time to plant your garden. Don’t forget to till first, and add the gourmet dirt before you give those plants a new home!
