Welcome spring and welcome gardening season! I’m diving all in and here are 6 of my best garden tips, tricks and hacks for this spring.
These are a few of my favorites and some that I abide by every single spring. Great tips and tricks that will benefit the growth of your gardens, and a hack or two that will save on the budget, and will look high end as well.
6 Of My Best Garden Tips, Tricks, and Hacks
Best Garden Tip 1 – Worm Castings
Before planting your vegetable garden, mix worm castings into the soil. I’m telling you straight from my mouth, this is the best organic garden fertilizer ever, providing that much needed nutrients to your garden. I wrote about it here. Not just valuable in your vegetable garden, the castings work well on your house plants, and any plants you have in planters around your yard.
You can buy the worm castings, HERE.
Best Garden Hack #2 – Go With Faux Concrete Planters That Look Real
Whenever I walk around flea markets and hit up estate sales and tag sales, I’m looking for concrete planters. Well, any good looking planter that catches my eye, really. I like to place them around our yards with boxwoods and other “deer resistant” plants. Something about planters gives a wanted elevation to garden beds and my rule of thumb is the more the merrier. However, said concrete planters come with a price tag whether you’re buying from random tag sales or not. Still, I’m a firm believer that every town, city or village comes with a home box store that has some good looking faux concrete planters. Here is why I’m a fan.
Obviously cost. Spending right around $20, they size up to fit the bill and stand up to severe weather. I have sourced a few great faux concrete planters for you, that will look amazing on your porch or displayed in your gardens. Click on each photo for the link.
Best Garden Trick #3 – Stack Planters For A Grecian Urn Look
So how about those gorgeous Grecian urns that are flooding the garden design catalogs? Here is a great hack for those: stack two faux planters. What I did here was turn one planter upside down and stack another right on top, bringing height and beauty to our patio sitting area.
Best Garden Tip #4 – Protected Plants From Deer, Rodents
And here’s another good tip to think about when planting those planters: If you decide to plant something like I did here, hasta, keep in mind that this is like salad for deer. Be sure to display the planters in areas that deer won’t approach and graze. Nothing is fool proof, however a deterrent that I have found that works pretty well, is coyote urine. Follow the product directions on when and how to spray, keeping in mind that it will need to be reapplied to the plants after a rain storm. It’s readily available at most garden centers and the one that I use and recommend can be purchased, HERE.
Best Garden Hack #5 – Makeover An Outdated Pot With Stone-Like Spray Paint
And if you have a small planter that looks a little worse for wear, go ahead a spray on some “stone looking” spray paint. Found widely at the home box stores and hobby stores, the stone spray paint is an epic game changer. And look no further than under a tree or on a roof for some moss to plant. Simply take a putty knife and carefully scrape the moss from the surface and place directly over the top of the dirt in the planter. Spray on water daily with a bottle mister and you’ve got an instant green pot. Easy peasy.
