Halloween Safety Tips and A DIY Costume

Out of the gate, I have to say that my kids are so hyped up about Halloween, one would think that they’ve already eaten loads and loads of candy.  This by far is their favorite holiday, and they start planning out their costumes months in advance.

Then I enter the picture, doing everything in my power to level them out, keep them even keel until it’s finally time to go trick-or-treating.  But behind the scenes, every time I tell the kids not to reach for the candy, I’m the one sneaking a snickers.  Whenever Mac and Caroline bring up Halloween, I’m counting the minutes until November 1st.  This has me wondering if I’m a Halloween Scrooge.

Perhaps.

Truth be told, and you may have already gathered this about me, I’m so much more in to making things pretty rather than creepy.  But this year is a little bit different.  This year, I’m kind of into it.  I’m feeling I can entertain some creepy; some ghoulish costumes, and maybe a few more snickers bars.

In preparation for my DIY Dutchess column and video on Halloween Safety Tips, I decided it was only appropriate to dress up as a Poughkeepsie Journal.  A DIY costume that I loved crafting.  And, to no surprise, it’s fabulous.

Using a store-bought tutu, I rolled up sheets of newspaper and hot glued each roll, one by one on each layer of the tutu, creating a fluffy skirt.  Then I took an old tank top and hot glued strips of newspaper on a diagonal.  And after six hours, I had myself a Halloween costume.
